West Point sued over using race as an admissions factor in the wake of landmark Supreme Court ruling

The Toronto Star

23-09-19 21:03

West Point, the US Military Academy, has been sued in federal court for using race and ethnicity as factors in its admissions process. The lawsuit has been filed by Students for Fair Admissions, the same group that led the lawsuit which led to the Supreme Court striking down affirmative action in college admissions. The group claims that West Point violates the Fifth Amendment of the US Constitution, which contains an equal-protection principle that binds the federal government. West Point has responded to the lawsuit by stating that it does not comment on ongoing investigations.

Israeli troops killed three people and injured around 30 others during a raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, according to Palestinian health officials. A fourth Palestinian was killed in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli army said that forces carried out a rare strike with a suicide drone during the operation and exchanged fire with gunmen in the camp. Meanwhile, unrest over the past week has escalated tensions in Gaza, leading to Israel barring entry to thousands of Palestinian labourers.

Prince William, billionaires Gates and Bloomberg say innovation provides climate hope

The Toronto Star

Prince William, Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg have announced the finalists for the Earthshot Prize, which will award five prizes of £1m ($1.2m) each to groups that develop innovative ways to save the planet. Among the 15 finalists are projects to reduce London’s air pollution, reduce livestock methane emissions using seaweed feedstock and develop DNA technology for sustainable textile dyes. William said that despite the need for realism about the climate crisis, he hoped his prize could provide hope that people could make a difference.

Democrats retain narrow control of Pennsylvania House after special election

The Toronto Star

23-09-20 00:46

Democrats have retained a one-vote majority in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives after former congressional aide Lindsay Powell won a seat in Pittsburgh. Powell’s victory gives Democrats a 102-101 majority in the House. Republicans have a 28-22 majority in the Senate, creating a divided Legislature that has kept Democrats from passing priorities such as broadened protections for LGBTQ+ people and gun control measures and Republicans from wins on issues including school vouchers. Most recently, the division has mired the state in a two-month budget stalemate after negotiations soured over education funding, in part because of the voucher debate.

Dozens of nations to sign U.N. ocean treaty but implementation still awaits

Reuters

23-09-20 03:16

A new United Nations treaty aimed at protecting the world's oceans is expected to be signed by at least 60 countries on Wednesday. The treaty, which was agreed in March and formally adopted by the UN in June, is seen as a crucial tool to meet the target of protecting 30% of the Earth's land and sea by 2030. The agreement will create ocean sanctuaries where fishing will be prohibited and ensure that human activity is subject to environmental impact assessments. However, the treaty still needs to be ratified on a national level before it goes into effect. Environmental groups have called for the treaty to be fully implemented by 2025 to ensure the protection target is reached.

At least 6 Palestinians are killed in latest fighting with Israel, Palestinian health officials say

The Toronto Star

23-09-20 07:19

Six Palestinians have been killed in recent clashes with Israeli forces in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. The violence is part of an ongoing wave of unrest that has plagued the region for over a year. The recent surge in violence has seen an increase in Israeli raids on Palestinian areas, as well as mounting Palestinian attacks against Israelis. The tensions are also spreading to Gaza, where Israeli forces have killed a 25-year-old Palestinian during violent protests at the separation fence. The violence has escalated tensions and led Israel to bar entry to thousands of Palestinian labourers from Gaza.
