Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, warned that US tech industry is at risk of “enormous damage” from escalating battle over chips between Washington and Beijing.
US export controls introduced by Biden admin have left Nvidia with “hands tied behind our back” and unable to sell advanced chips in one of biggest markets.
At same time, Chinese companies are building own chips to rival Nvidia’s processors.
US efforts to prevent China buying or developing advanced chips has become most aggressive front in new cold war between two powers.
Huang warned US lawmakers to be “thoughtful” about imposing further rules restricting trade with China.
Blocking US tech industry’s access to China would “cut the Chips Act off at the knee”, referring to Biden admin’s $52bn funding package to encourage construction of semiconductor manufacturing facilities.
Nvidia has become primary source of chips to train “large language models” that power chatbots, and its market capitalisation has more than doubled this year.
Since August, Nvidia has been blocked from selling its most advanced chips to Chinese customers due to US export controls.
Huang said China cannot be replaced as both a source of components and an end market for its products, and any potential conflict in the region could expose more than $12bn in Nvidia’s annual revenues.
