Overview

Donald John Trump (born June 14, 1946) is the 45th and current President of the United States, in office since January 20, 2017. Before entering politics, he was a businessman and television personality.

Trump was born and raised in the New York City borough of Queens, and received an economics degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He took charge of his family’s real estate business in 1971, renamed it The Trump Organization, and expanded its operations from Queens and Brooklyn into Manhattan. The company built or renovated skyscrapers, hotels, casinos, and golf courses. Trump later started various side ventures, mostly by licensing his name. He managed the company until his 2017 inauguration.

Trump has said that he began his career with “a small loan of one million dollars” from his father, Fred Trump. He used the loan to buy and renovate the derelict Commodore Hotel, which he turned into the Grand Hyatt New York. He subsequently acquired the Plaza Hotel for $407 million in 1988, and spent $125 million to renovate it.

  1. Early life and education

Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946, at the Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in the borough of Queens, New York City. His parents were Frederick Christ Trump, a real estate developer, and Mary Anne MacLeod. Trump grew up in the Jamaica Estates neighborhood of Queens, and attended the Kew-Forest School from kindergarten through seventh grade. At age 13, he was enrolled in the New York Military Academy, a private boarding school, after his parents discovered that he had made frequent trips into Manhattan without their permission. In 1964, Trump enrolled at Fordham University. After two years, he transferred to the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, because it offered one of the few real estate studies departments in United States academia.

Trump graduated from Wharton in May 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree in economics. During his studies, Trump worked at the family’s real estate and construction firms, Elizabeth Trump & Son and the Trump Organization, and briefly for the Commodities Exchange Division of the Chemical Bank (now JPMorgan Chase). In 1968, Trump began his career at his father’s company, the Trump Organization, as a middle manager. He was later promoted to president of the company in 1971.

  1. 2016 presidential campaign

Trump formally announced his candidacy for President in a speech on June 16, 2015, at Trump Tower in New York City. In the speech, Trump drew attention to domestic issues such as illegal immigration, offshoring of American jobs, the U.S. national debt, and Islamic terrorism, which he described as a “threat to Western civilization”.[1][2][3] He also announced his intention to self-fund his campaign.[4][5]

On November 8, 2016, Trump and Pence were elected president and vice president of the United States, respectively, in the presidential election. Trump received a higher number of electoral votes than Hillary Clinton, although Clinton won the popular vote by nearly 3 million votes. Trump’s victory was considered a political upset by most observers, as polls had consistently showed Clinton with a nationwide – though diminishing – lead, as well as a favorable advantage in most of the battleground states, leading many to expect a Clinton victory.

  1. Inauguration

Donald John Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States on January 20, 2017. Trump, a Republican, took office as the oldest president inaugurated, at the age of 70. He was also the first president without prior military or government service. Trump’s victory over Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election surprised many pundits and pollsters, as Clinton was widely expected to win. Trump’s inauguration drew the second-largest television audience of any inauguration, with an estimated 38 million viewers.

During his campaign, Trump had promised to “Make America Great Again” and pledged to repeal the Affordable Care Act, build a wall along the United States-Mexico border, and temporarily ban Muslims from entering the United States. As president, Trump has faced several challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and nationwide protests against police brutality and racial injustice. Trump has also been accused of numerous instances of corruption and sexual misconduct.

  1. Foreign policy

Donald Trump’s foreign policy has been characterized by his America First ideology, which puts the interests of the United States above all else. He has frequently been critical of other countries, especially those that he perceives as taking advantage of the United States. Trump has also been critical of multilateralism, and has sought to renegotiate or withdraw from several international treaties and agreements.

Trump’s foreign policy has been marked by a number of significant developments. In 2017, he became the first sitting president to travel to Saudi Arabia, where he delivered a speech calling for a united front against radical Islamic terrorism. Trump also oversaw the implementation of a travel ban that restricted travel from several Muslim-majority countries. In 2018, Trump held a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, becoming the first sitting president to meet with a North Korean leader. The meeting resulted in a commitment from North Korea to work towards denuclearization, although progress has since stalled.

In 2019, Trump ordered the withdrawal of troops from Syria, a decision that was criticized by many in the international community. Trump has also been a strong supporter of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and in 2020 he became the first sitting president to travel to the occupied Golan Heights. Trump has also been accused of using foreign policy for personal gain, as several of his actions have been seen as benefitting his personal business interests.

He was impeached on December 18, 2019, by the U.S. House of Representatives on two counts: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The charges stemmed from his actions regarding Ukraine, including a July 25, 2019, phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in which Trump pressured Zelensky to open an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden.

He will also be remembered for his divisive rhetoric and his attack on the free press. Trump was a controversial president, and his legacy will be debated for years to come.
