  • Australia’s Defense Department has decided to remove surveillance cameras made by Chinese Communist Party-linked companies from its buildings

  • Companies in question are Hikvision and Dahua, both of which are partly owned by the Communist Party-ruled government in China

  • At least 913 cameras, intercoms, electronic entry systems and video recorders made by these companies are located in government and agency offices including the Defense Department and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

  • The Australian War Memorial and National Disability Insurance Agency have also stated their intention to remove the Chinese cameras from their sites

  • The move follows similar decisions made by the US and Britain, which banned telecommunication and video surveillance equipment from several prominent Chinese brands including Hikvision and Dahua to protect their respective nation’s communications network

  • The Australian audit found that cameras and security equipment from Hikvision and Dahua were present in almost every department except the Agriculture Department and the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet

  • Concerns were raised regarding the companies being subject to China’s National Intelligence Law, which requires them to cooperate with Chinese intelligence agencies, and the potential for sensitive information to be sent back to China against the interests of Australian citizens.
