Alibaba Group Holding’s plan to split into six business groups and launch separate public listings has triggered layoff fears among their 240,000 employees. The restructuring was embraced by investors, sending the company’s Hong Kong-listed shares up 12.2%. Central platform strategy, introduced by CEO Daniel Zhang in 2015, is being abandoned in favor of the new six groups and separate IPOs.

The six groups are Cloud Intelligence Group, Taobao Tmall Commerce Group, Local Service Group, Cainiao Smart Logistics, Global Digital Commerce Group, and Digital Media and Entertainment Group. Each will have its own CEO and board of directors, with the exception of Taobao Tmall Commerce Group remaining inside the listed company. Logistics unit Cainiao, Alibaba’s Southeast Asian e-commerce platform Lazada, and delivery platform Ele.me have all been considering IPOs and previously issued stock options to staff.

Alibaba has undergone various management changes since 2021 to reverse slowing business, with Trudy Dai taking charge of a new China digital commerce team effectively weakening Zhang’s influence. After the restructuring, Zhang will remain chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group, and will also serve as the CEO of the Cloud Intelligence Group. Jiang Fan will become the CEO of the Global Digital Commerce Group.
