Chinese electric carmakers like Li Auto, BYD, Nio and Xpeng Motors are rapidly rising in popularity and are now dominating the multinational competitors in the Chinese car market.

China is now the world’s largest car market, and China manufactures and sells most of the world’s electric cars. China’s dominance in electric cars extends to the entire value chain, from electric motors and lithium batteries to the development of sodium batteries. More than 80% of electric cars sold in China last year were made by domestic automakers, who have overtaken multinational companies in the total number of cars sold each month.

Foreign automakers are being pushed to shift more quickly to electric cars in Europe and the United States with emissions rules proposed by the Biden administration. In China, foreign companies have been forced to operate through joint ventures with Chinese automakers, who have trained a generation of Chinese auto engineers now working for competitive domestic rivals. Electric vehicle sales have grown more slowly this year after national subsidies for purchases expired at the end of December. Tesla, which sells only electric cars, has had slower growth lately than Chinese electric car manufacturers, prompting the company to cut prices.

Chinese consumers have gravitated towards flashy electric car exteriors and interiors, and multinational companies are trying to keep up. Porsche enthusiast, Mr. Cao, dismisses most designs of multinational automakers as dull. Chinese car buyers are also looking towards electric S.U.V.s, like the Li Auto L9, for day trips to parks. Foreign automakers no longer have the same appeal, as Chinese electric car brands are now the ones that other companies want to surround on the showroom floor.
