PDD Holdings, the parent company of one of China’s biggest ecommerce sites, has moved its headquarters to Ireland in order to shield its global arm from US-China tensions. It owns Pinduoduo and Temu, an online marketplace that recently launched in the US and is expanding into Europe. Analysts suggest the move is pre-emptive to protect Temu from any escalations in US offensive.

The move to Ireland could give the company tax benefits and smooth the path for any standalone listing of the Temu business. It also makes it easier to coordinate tax issues with European countries and the US. Ireland is also home to various tech giants such as Google, Facebook, and Amazon.

PDD has pledged to invest $1.4bn to help Chinese brands increase their presence overseas and has introduced a range of incentives to encourage merchants to sell on Temu. The majority of its employees are still based in mainland China and its business operations remain in China.
