Andrew Bowie, the nuclear minister, made the comments as the Tories seek to retain Boris Johnson’s former seat of Uxbridge and Ruislip, as well as the traditionally safe seats of Somerton and Frome, and Selby and Ainsty. When asked if the party could lose all three seats, Bowie responded: “Of course it’s possible we could lose all three - but it’s also possible that we might win all three. I’m an optimist, I’m a Scottish Conservative and Scotland football fan. I have to be an optimist.” The by-elections are being seen as a test of public opinion on the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as the state of the economy, the NHS, and other key issues.
