The rock star designers behind the most audacious album covers of all time

Telegraph

23-07-13 19:00

A new documentary called "Squaring the Circle" explores the work of Hipgnosis, the iconic graphic design company that created album covers for some of the biggest rock bands of the 1970s. Founded by Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson in 1967, Hipgnosis was known for its innovative and often surreal designs that pushed the boundaries of album cover art. The documentary features contributions from musicians such as Paul McCartney, Jimmy Page, and David Gilmour, and explores some of the studio's most iconic covers, including Pink Floyd's "Animals" and Led Zeppelin's "Houses of the Holy." The film also delves into the tumultuous relationships between the members of Hipgnosis and the musicians they worked with, as well as the changing landscape of the music industry and the decline of album cover art in the digital age.

Hipgnosis’s designs were often ambitious and extravagant, involving complex photo shoots and elaborate set designs. For example, the cover of Pink Floyd’s “Animals” featured a giant inflatable pig floating above Battersea Power Station in London. The shoot was beset with difficulties, including the pig breaking loose and causing problems with air traffic control. The documentary also explores the strained relationship between Storm Thorgerson and Roger Waters, the creative force behind Pink Floyd, who disagreed over the design concept for the album cover.

Despite the challenges and tensions involved in creating these iconic album covers, Hipgnosis’s work has stood the test of time and continues to be celebrated for its originality and creativity. The documentary offers a fascinating look at the world of album cover art in the 1970s and the artists who pushed the boundaries of what was possible.

The once-booming Victorian tree change towns where rent is slowing

The Sydney Morning Herald

23-07-13 19:00

The growth of regional rent prices in Victoria, Australia, is slowing down, indicating that the trend of people moving to regional areas during the pandemic is diminishing. While rents in some areas have fallen, others have experienced a significant increase. However, the slowing growth rates are expected to ease life for regional tenants. The return of international migration and fewer people fleeing Melbourne post-lockdowns have shifted demand for rentals back to the metropolitan area. However, some regional markets continue to struggle with affordability despite the slowdown.

The once-booming NSW sea change towns now at a discount

The Sydney Morning Herald

Rents in regional NSW are starting to decline after reaching record highs during the pandemic. The decline is being seen in areas such as the Southern Highlands, Batemans Bay, and Ballina, while other towns are still experiencing rising rents. The decline in rents is being attributed to an increase in supply as more properties return to the rental market, as well as a decrease in demand as tree and sea change activity slows and affordability pressures push tenants to look elsewhere or consolidate households.

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan: ‘Not worried about a nuclear holocaust? You should be’

Telegraph

23-07-14 14:00

Director Christopher Nolan opens up about his upcoming film "Oppenheimer," which tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the physicist who led the Manhattan Project and developed the atomic bomb. Nolan reveals that his daughter had a small role in the film, playing a character who is killed in a nuclear explosion. He explains that this was his way of expressing the idea that creating a destructive power like the atomic bomb will also destroy those who are near and dear to you. Nolan also discusses the personal aspects of the film and the themes of energy and sexuality that are explored through Oppenheimer's character. The director emphasizes that he doesn't make films to make a point, but rather to ask engaging questions and entertain the audience.

Nolan also addresses the issue of the theatrical experience and expresses his disappointment with the studios’ narrow conception of what a big-screen film should be. He believes that cinema is a pure audiovisual experience and that the scale of the story being told is not the only thing that matters. He mentions his own formative cinema-going experience of seeing “Star Wars” and argues that the film’s success was not just due to its great story, but also its incredible visual and aural experience. Nolan criticizes the denial of what movies actually are and the belief that films can be watched on mobile phones.

Finally, when asked if he would have pressed the button to create the atomic bomb if he were in Oppenheimer’s place, Nolan gives a long, involved answer about ethics and probability but ultimately says that the expression of his answer is the film itself. “Oppenheimer” is set to release in cinemas on Friday.

Who gets credit for cooling inflation? Biden, if not Bidenomics.

Washington Post Opinion

23-07-14 12:00

The US economy's recent good performance is down to "boring, standard economic textbook fixes for inflation," such as rising interest rates, rather than progressive populist policies, according to Megan McArdle in an op-ed for the Washington Post. She argues that the Federal Reserve's 10 rate hikes since March 2022 have brought consumer demand in line with supply, and that the economy has absorbed these hikes well. McArdle also credits President Biden for "staying out of the Fed's way," unlike his predecessor Donald Trump, and emphasises the importance of central bank independence in combating inflation.

‘They’re driving me insane’: The 24/7 life of a political chief of staff

The Sydney Morning Herald

23-07-14 19:00

Chiefs of staff, the ultimate insiders of the political system, play a crucial role in advising and managing the backroom business of government for elected representatives. They have a low profile and are rarely recognized by the public. Their jobs are often intense and demanding, requiring long hours and complete dedication. They are responsible for managing the schedules, communication, and decision-making processes of their bosses. Chiefs of staff are privy to their bosses' deepest secrets and fears, and they often serve as confidantes and therapists. They are also responsible for protecting their bosses, managing crises, and making tough decisions. A good chief of staff can make the difference between success and failure for a political leader. They often sacrifice their personal lives and well-being to serve their bosses and the government. Despite the demanding nature of the job, many chiefs of staff find it rewarding and feel privileged to have had a position at the heart of government.
